when u say radio decoding service - does that include the ones online that charge £20 or so - the main dealer wants £80-£90 : (

By radio decoding service, I mean an electronics technician who will read the code from the radio's eeprom chip. You should find such services in yellow pages. - often audio shops. Charges should be a lot better than £80/90. (typically £10-40 depending on complexity of work)

I don't recommend any commercial online serial number decoding service. Radio codes from SN are not 100% reliable.

And may I add, that it is a complete discrace that a main dealership should suggest a charge of £80/90. It should be free from them.

thanks for that - father in law has had car from new but didnt get code from the dealer (wasnt a main dealer) - not until hios battery went flat that he realised.
Astonomical charge from nissan isnt it.
